One of the four Char Dham India, Rameshwaram Temple lies gracefully as a subset of the Pamban Island also called as the Rameshwaram Temple. The temple is one of the magnificent site of pilgrim built in Dravidian Style and at the top of the peninsula region. The temple defines faith that the people hold in the Almighty. The temple has its significance in terms of the Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga Darshan of Lord Shiva in the temple. Myriads of devotees visit the temple to pay homage to Lord Shiva.

The Rameshwaram temple also has carvings made that act as evidence for the existence of Lord Ram. A walk across the temple reinstall faith and trust in Almighty. One among the twelve jyotirlingas on Lord Shiva is found in the Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga Temple. The temple is believed to have the longest corridor with columns of granite at regular intervals.

Rameshwaram Temple History

The temple has been believed to be the abode of Lord Shiva as set up by Lord Ram. It is considered that the Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga Temple was installed by Lord Rama post the war in Ramayana to abscond himself from the sins after he killed demons.

The temple has two deities, one the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva that was brought by Lord Rams. It is named as Ramanathaswamy, a picturesque of lord blessing Ram. Another deity is the Viswalingam that is believed to be bought by Lord Hanuman as instructed by Rama. Since Hanuman was late in bringing the linga, Sita carved a linga out of the sand so that the puja of Lord Shiva could be started. However, when he tried to replace, the linga made from sand was not moving. So they decided to have both linga and worship them together.

Rameshwaram Darshan

The Temple opens at 5 in the morning. Tourist line up in the queue to have a glance at the Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga Darshan. Avoid going late as the temple would become crowdy. A bath before visiting the temple is suggested. You cannot trail along the temple for long and only a 2-3 minutes budder is kept to allow you to stay in the temple.
