The temple that currently resided in the Somnath district is the seventh incarnation. The initial or the first temple was considered to be made by the God of Moon himself for Lord Shiva. During the 7th century, the temple went under construction initiated by the king of Maitraka. This was then destroyed by the Sink governor named Junayed and rebuilt by the Nagabhata II.

An invasion in 1024 by Mahmud Ghazni who took loads of jewelry devastated the temple totally. The red sandstone was then replaced by stone structure by Solanki King Bhima and Paramara King Bhoj. Followed by the attacks by sultana and then by Aurangzeb, the recent temple has been crafted by the trust of Somnath committee in 1995 and is maintained by the same.
