One of the most significant temples that comprises of one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, the Somnath Temple dwells in the Prabhas Kshetra near Veraval in Gujarat. The Somnath Temple is the perfect definition of rich heritage and Indian culture. The temple has its name etched on the scripture that defines Hindu origin. The Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva is deemed as the protector of moon God and so the name Somnath. Also, the temple is regarded as the Eternal Shrine owing to the fact that the temple has been devastated six times but the same has been rebuilt each time.

Somnath Temple History

The temple that currently resided in the Somnath district is the seventh incarnation. The initial or the first temple was considered to be made by the God of Moon himself for Lord Shiva. During the 7th century, the temple went under construction initiated by the king of Maitraka. This was then destroyed by the Sink governor named Junayed and rebuilt by the Nagabhata II.

An invasion in 1024 by Mahmud Ghazni who took loads of jewelry devastated the temple totally. The red sandstone was then replaced by stone structure by Solanki King Bhima and Paramara King Bhoj. Followed by the attacks by sultana and then by Aurangzeb, the recent temple has been crafted by the trust of Somnath committee in 1995 and is maintained by the same.

Somnath Temple Darshan Timing

The temple is flocked by tourist and devotees throughout the day and there is a huge rush. People indulge in pushing and hitting to have a glance of the Jyotirlinga of Lord Shiva at the temple. This could be due to the fact that devotees love to be a part of aarti performed at the temple that offers peace of mind. This leads to overcrowding during the time of aarti. Hence, it is advisable that you know the darshan as well as the aarti timings so that you can choose the time you wish to visit the temple and avoid the unwanted hush and harassment indulging into hassle-free darshan.

The door of the temple open wide at 0600hrs in the morning and closes at 2100hrs. Aarti is held thrice throughout the day with the timings being 0700hrs, 1200hrs, and 1900hrs.

Things Not Allowed Inside The Somnath Temple

Depicting one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva, devotees are not allowed to wear leather items inside the temple. Belt, mobile phones, camera or shoes, all need to be kept aside before entering the temple. A separate place or a stall is available outside the temple where you can deposit then safe. For luxurious items, you can opt for a locker or it would be beneficial it would keep them in your hotel rooms when leaving for the temple.

Located at the Sangam of three rivers, preferably known as Triveni, Somnath Temple is also called as Prabhas Teerth. You can opt for a bus that would take you around the temple and the nearby places. A price of 20INR needs to be paid and you can avail of the service. If you wish to own privacy you can hire a cab that would cost you around 150INR. A two-hour ride would cover all the interesting places near the temple. Some of them include Old Temple of Somnath, Sarada Math, Geeta Temple, Triveni Sangam, Surya Temple and a lot more.

How To Reach Somnath Temple

Also, the Porbandar airport can be accessed to reach the temple. 114 km distance between the airport and temple can be covered via bus or a cab.
