Complete Information About India Gate Delhi

India Gate is a national monument located in Delhi. It was built in 1931. This is a memorial that was built to honor the soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. It is made in granite, yellow and red sandstone. India Gate was originally called All India War Memorial. This is one of the monuments built by the British in India. It is built in simplistic design and no elaborate motifs have been used to design and build this national monument.

1. History Of India Gate Delhi

India Gate is a war memorial that stands tall in pride saluting the brave soldiers who were martyred in World War I. Within the walls of this structure is inscriptions of the names of 13,300 soldiers who lost their lives in the war. An addition to this structure was later added in the year 1971. This small structure is made in black marble with a rifle standing in the reverse position topped with a helmet. This structure is called the Amar Jyoti Jawan. The height of the India Gate is 42 meters. Sir Edwin Lutyens designed and built this monument.

This monument is influenced by the Triumphal Arch in Paris. Surrounding this arch there are lawns and fountains. On either side of the arch, there are motifs of stylised suns. There are inscriptions dedicated to the martyred soldiers at the top of the arch. The structure is hexagonal in shape and it stands on the red Bharatpur sandstone. The canopy within this complex represents that of the canopy in Mahabalipuram and is 73 feet tall. Until the Indian Independence, this canopy has the statue of King George V and was later removed and located to Coronation Park in Delhi.

  • There is a shrine within this structure where the eternal flame is lit and is known as Amar Jawan Jyoti and burns all the time to honor the martyred soldiers.
  • On all national occasions, the President and the Prime Minister of India pay homage to the Amar Jawan Jyoti.
  • Every year the parade on the Republic Day marches near the India Gate.
  • Sunsets give a breathtaking view of the India Gate with all the lights lite up.

India Gate information is about the importance of India Gate. This is a war memorial and a tomb of the martyred soldiers of the India Army who were killed during World War I. It was built to honor and pay homage to these soldiers. Names of more than 13,000 soldiers are inscribed on the walls of this monument.

There are more than 80,000 soldiers who had participated in the war and died. Names of each and every soldier who had participated and died in World War I and the Afghan War are inscribed on the walls of this structure to immortalize them. It has inscriptions of known as well as unknown soldiers from the Indian as well as the British Army. Digital records of these inscriptions have also been created.
