Red Fort was built by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and is located in capital city of India, Delhi. This is a UNESCO world heritage site. Red Fort monument that is built in red sandstone has been a place for conducting many ceremonies by the Royals. Within the complex of the Red Fort, there are many tourists places of attractions. 1. Red Fort History

It was built in the 17th century on 254 acres of land and was built as a palace of Shah Jahan when he used it as a capital city. Red Fort has many pavilions and depicts the creativity of the Mughal Emperor. Architect Ustad Ahmad Lahauri designed this palace. It is built on the banks of the holy River Yamuna. It took 8 years to build the Red Fort. This palace has been the Royal residence of many Emperors who ruled this place. The name ‘Red Fort’ is derived because it is built in red sandstone. Red Fort is a place where the India Prime Minister deliver their Independence Day speech.

When Shah Jahan ruled this place which is now Delhi, it was called Shahjahanabad. Post Shah Jahan and after Aurangzeb reigned the Mughal Dynasty, the Red Fort had started to lose its luster. It has a silver ceiling which was replaced with copper ceiling to raise money. In the year 1793, a Persian Emperor Nadir Shah took over the Red Fort and took away many valuable possessions from the Fort.

The Marathas were asked to protect the Mughal emperors. The Marathas defeated the 16th Mughal Emperor Shah Alam II and ruled over Delhi for 20 years until the British defeated them and took away all the valuable possessions including the Kohinoor diamond which was placed inside the Fort. All the valuables such as the Crown of Bahadur Shah Zafar, the wine cup of Shah Jahan and many more were looted by the British and sent to Great Britain. The Red Fort monument was once a magnificent structure that was built with precious stones and metals.

2. Red Fort Architecture

The Red Fort is designed and built in the octogonal shape and has many marble decorations throughout the fort. The Kohinoor diamond, which the British took away was a part of the decoration inside the Red Fort. It has three gates and is one of the largest forts in Delhi. It is built in a blend of Mughal, Hindu, and Persian architectural style.

Within the complex of Red Fort, there are many other buildings like the Moti Masjid, Naubat Khana which was the music room, Mumtaz and Rang Mahal were the women’s quarters and a museum that has all the artifacts from the Mughal Era. There are many gardens, pavilions, and decorative arches throughout the Red Fort complex of palaces and buildings. This is one of the largest historical monuments Red Fort that is an imposing structure in Delhi.

● In the days of the Mughal era, Red Fort was called Qila-E-Mubarak
● After the Sepoy Mutiny, the British stole the famous Kohinoor diamond from the Red Fort
● This is the UNESCO world heritage site
● The Red Fort was originally made in limestone and painted red by the British when the stone was chipping off
● The walls were constructed in red sandstone and get its name from the color of the outer walls of the fort
● The Lahore gate is the main entrance of the Red Fort. It was called the Lahore gate because it faces Lahore
● A minor gate from the Red Fort leads to the banks of the River Yamuna and is called the Watergate
● The trial of Bahadur Shah took place in his own palace by the Britishers
● Since the time of Indian independence, every Prime Minister delivers the speech at the Red Fort

4. Red Fort Inside

There are many attractions inside the Red Fort. Most of these structures were destroyed and a few which remain from the main attraction can be visited for their architecture, history, and design. You can visit these historic edifices and explore the palaces to get an essence of history and wars these structures have survived. These are the structures that you can visit inside the Red Fort.

5. Mumtaz Mahal

This is one of the 6 structures inside the Red Fort complex. All the structures inside the Red Fort is connected by River Yamuna. This palace was constructed in white marble and has floral motifs on them. This is an impressive structure to explore its architecture and design. These used to be women’s quarters and has an archeological museum. Inside this museum, there are many artifacts from the Mughal Era like the swords, carpets, curtains, paintings, and other objects.

6. Khas Mahal

This palace used to be the private residence of the Mughal Emperor. There are three chambers inside this palace. The sitting room, the sleeping room, and another chamber. The palace is decorated with white marble and floral motifs.

7. Rang Mahal

It means the ‘Palace of Colors.’ This palace had a stream of running water under its base which would keep the temperature of this palace cool during the summer. The base level of this palace was used by women during the summers. It was the house where the wives, as well as the mistresses of the Emperors, lived.

8. Hira Mahal

This was the last structure that was built by Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah II before the British invaded India. As per the legends, Bahadur Shah is said to have hidden a very precious diamond inside this palace which is said to be even more precious than the Kohinoor diamond. This diamond is not yet found.

9. Moti Masjid

Moti Masjid means ‘Pearl Mosque.’ Aurangzeb built this mosque for his personal use. It has many domes and arches. It is constructed in marble. It has a courtyard. This is a place that you can visit marvel the simplicity of architecture and design.

10. Hammam

This is a building that has baths. It was used by the Emperors. It has a dressing room and hot water flowing from the taps. During the times when Mughals ruled, rose water was used in these baths. The baths are designed in floral motifs and white marble.

11. Diwan-I-Khas

This was the hall where the Emperor met his ministers. It has a silver ceiling and the peacock throne which was looted by the Britishers. This is one of the opulent remaining structures that you can visit and marvel its architecture and design.

12. Diwan-I-Am

These used to be the palatial Royal apartments of the Emperors. It is built in white marble with many ornate decorations. The Emperor would show himself to his people from this place and wave at his people.

13. Things To See In Red Fort Delhi

One of the gates of the Red Fort opens to a bazaar where you can go street shopping. Jama Masjid, India Gate, Dilli Haat, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, Agrasen Baoli, and many other street markets located closer to the Red Fort. You can visit these monuments, eat your heart out, relish the street food as well as go shopping near Red Fort.

16. Best Time To Visit Red Fort

Best time to visit Red Fort is between October to March, If you are visiting the after march then be prepared for hot summer, the temperature of Delhi in summer almost touch 40 degrees Celsius. By the end of the August, the Monsoons season starts, a trip to Red fort or touring Delhi is not a good idea.

17. Time Taken To Visit Red Fort

The minimum time taken to visit the Red Fort is 2hrs. If you thoroughly visit all the parts of Red Fort then it may take up to 4hrs.
